How to choose the car gearbox?

January 29, 2025
MT - manual transmission
Advantages: stable performance, fuel economy, much like the reliable operation of Mining Heavy Duty Gearboxes in tough industrial settings.
Disadvantages: tedious operation, especially challenging for novices. When dealing with a Manual Transmission, one needs to step on the clutch, which we call the manual file, that is, MT - manual transmission. In general, only those who are particularly confident in their driving skills like this transmission. A good driver, with the precision similar to the fine - tuning required in the production of Specialized Gearboxes for Petrochemicals, can take advantage of this transmission's acceleration, fuel economy, and mechanical reliability. However, for a novice driver, a ramp can be enough to scare away a half of the rookie drivers.
When it comes to simple automatic transmissions, there is more than one. Just as in the diverse world of Industrial Gearboxes such as Standard Industrial Gearboxes and Machine Tool Cutting Gearboxes, the automotive transmission field is also rich in variety. At present, the automatic transmissions on the market in China generally include: automatic transmission (AT), electronically controlled automatic transmission (AMT), dual clutch transmission (DCT), and infinitely variable transmission (CVT).
AT - automatic transmission
Advantages: stable performance, simple operation, providing a smooth driving experience comparable to the seamless operation of Industrial Gearboxes in well - tuned machinery.

Disadvantages: High fuel consumption, slow shift response, which can be a drawback similar to the inefficiencies sometimes found in some less - optimized mechanical systems.

If you see the gear is divided into P, R, N, D, 2, 1 or L, etc., this is an AT automatic transmission, which is the most common automatic transmission. In terms of advantages, this transmission technology is mature, stable performance; operation is very simple, a D-file is almost once and for all, drivers who are accustomed to manual transmission, often feel that this transmission is too boring, the driver seems to have nothing to do.

The price paid for the driver’s laziness is that the AT transmission has high fuel consumption and is slow in terms of dynamic response, resulting in a slight lack of “driveability”.

AMT - Electronically Controlled Mechanical Automatic Transmission

Advantages: economical

Disadvantages: shift "frustration" is obvious, there is power interruption

MT shifts troublesome, AT is simple but the fuel consumption is high. Is there a transmission that combines the advantages of both? Yes, this is AMT. It's easy to remember. In a nutshell, the AMT gearbox is a conventional manual transmission equipped with a computer, the driver only need to push and pull the gear lever, the computer will calculate the best shift results, simple operation, accurate shifts do not make mistakes, but also more fuel-efficient .

Why is the "delivery of both ability and virtue" of transmissions so common in the market? Because AMT also has a very short board: poor shift comfort is easy to produce a more obvious "frustration"; power shift will occur during the shift. Therefore, AMT is currently only appearing in some low-end models because of its low manufacturing cost.

CVT - infinitely variable

Advantages: smooth shifting

Disadvantages: high probability of failure and limited load-carrying torque

The CVT gearbox is also called a continuously variable transmission. As the name implies, there is no specific gear, and the gear becomes a steel belt. As a result, the advantages of the CVT gearbox are also obvious: the Power transmission is smoother, and the efficiency is also high. However, at the same time, the disadvantages are also obvious. The steel belts that drive the transmission are naturally less able to withstand the torque than the gears, and are prone to slipping and breaking. Compared with traditional automatic transmissions, the cost is also high.

DCT - Dual Clutch Transmission

Advantages: smooth shifting, no power, low fuel consumption

Disadvantages: "dry" poor heat dissipation, high requirements on the manufacturing process

From MT to CVT, there are so many car transmissions, but it doesn't seem to have a versatile player. If you want to choose a driving pleasure in an easy-to-operate automatic transmission, with smooth power output and low fuel consumption, what should you choose?

The closest answer is the DCT dual clutch transmission, also known as DSG. The so-called double clutch, that is, the two clutches work in rotation, to ensure that there is always a set of gears output power during shifting, so the shift response is very fast, power loss is small, and can effectively reduce fuel consumption.

However, it is worth noting that DCT is divided into dry and wet. Dry dual clutch due to poor heat dissipation, prone to clutch overheating damage, and wet dual clutch transmission, by submerging the friction plate in the gearbox oil, so that transmission oil play a role in cooling and lubrication, and to avoid overheating The situation appears.

Therefore, if you choose DCT, look for the word “wet”. There are not many wet clutches in the market, but it is not without them. For example, the upcoming Changan CS15 automatic version will be equipped with a DCT wet dual clutch transmission.

At present, the main problem facing the domestic DCT gearbox is that it requires high precision in manufacturing and processing. CS15 equipped with DCT transmission, components using the German PRAWEMA aerospace-class ultra-high-precision machining, with Germany's Buderus ceramic-grade mirror polishing process, and use the most exquisite French Komma automation equipment production line and the most demanding German Desenkrupp Bo automated detection line, to ensure the international level of ultra-high quality requirements.

This rare DCT wet dual clutch transmission will be first equipped with the upcoming Changan CS15 automatic version. If you want to pick a car that has a quick shift, a feeling of speed increase, stability, and low fuel consumption, it will be a very good choice.
